Mt Pleasant Baptist Church

History of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church
Sandy Mountain Mission was started in 1953 in an old school house. It was sponsored by Congaree Baptist Church. It failed to grow as had been hoped for. Rev. J ames Geddings served as pastor.
After some time Mr. and Mrs. Sam Garland purchased the building and started meeting in one room. In 1956 the church was organized as Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M.E. Kyzer. The church began to grow.
In June 1959, Rev. J. H. Roland was called to pastor the church. The old building was renovated and class rooms built with labor of the members.
In 1961 a five room brick pastorium was built also, with labor of church members. In 1963 we began the first unit of a new church building. This was completed in 1964 with a continual growth. Shortly afterwards we completed a small fellowship hall and the second unit of the church building. In 1972 we broke ground for a new and larger sanctuary, having to tear the fellowship hall down to make room. This was completed in early 1973, complete with baptistry and a seating capacity of 300. Dedication was held February 18, 1973. On June 24, 1973, Rev. Roland's wife went home to be with the Lord. Since then a stone of dedication has been placed in the wall of the sanctuary in loving memory of her victorious faith and dedicated service. In 1975 we built, debt free, a large fellowship hall. Rev. Roland is now nearing his 23rd year of service~ We thank God for his blessings.
In September 2008, after 49 years of faithful service, Pastor Roland resigned, making October 12, 2008 his final day as Pastor of Mt Pleasant Baptist Church. Although his members will miss him greatly, we wish him and Sister Daisy all the Blessings God has to give!!
On April 26, 2009, the Church voted to call Bro James Gary Hanks to our church as Pastor, he accepted.
Bro Hanks comes to us from Moultrie, Ga, along with his wife, Anne, of 30 years.
